Twitter for Teachers: Twelve Teachers to Follow
Advances in web-based technology allow teachers to enrich their lesson with dynamic content that wasn’t as readily available before. Social media has also emerged as an important educational resource. Twitter is one way teachers are able to not only engage with their students, but also to communicate with one another. The following Twitter accounts belong to outstanding educators who are making enormous strides in the advancement of educational technology and social media. Jerry Blumengarten Jerry Blumengarten, also known as "Cybrary Man," has dedicated much of his career to cataloguing educational websites so that students, parents and teachers have easy access to the Internet’s wealth of educational resources. Currently, Jerry’s “Cybrary” catalogues over 20,000 educational websites. Tom Whitby Tom Whitby is an Adjunct Professor of Education at St. Joseph’s College in New York. He is highly active in educational social media, having started numerous educational groups on LinkedIn. Tom was awarded a 2009 EduBlog Award for Most Influential Educational Twitter Series for co-founding #EdChat, a popular weekly Twitter chat for teachers. Steven W. Anderson Steven Anderson is the Instructional Technologist at Clemmons Middle School in North Carolina, where he works with teachers and administrators to utilize technology in the classroom. He is one of the cofounders of #EdChat, sharing the EduBlog Award for Most Influential Educational Twitter Series, as well as being voted Most Influential tweeter. Shelley S. Terrell Shelley Terrell is another cofounder of #EdChat. She is an international speaker and TESOL educator, who hosts American TESOL’S Free Friday Webinars. Her social media efforts have been recognized by The New York Times and The Washington Post. Additionally, Shelley is the author of The 30 Goals Challenge for Educators. Berni Wall Berni Wall works in the United Kingdom as an English Language teacher for doctors and businessmen whose first language is not English. She currently works for RLI Language Services, training aspiring English Language teachers. Lisa Dabbs Lisa Dabbs is an educational coach and consultant who works with new teachers to guide and inspire them during their first few years teaching. She contributes to Edutopia as a blogger and mentor for new teachers, and also conducts various webinars --- some of which can be seen on her YouTube Channel, New Teacher First Year. Nicholas Provenzano The self-proclaimed “Lady Gaga of teaching,” Nicholas Provenzano is an educational consultant for school districts and businesses. He is an active blogger who has written for Edutopia and has his own blog, The Nerdy Teacher. Nicholas frequently works with the United States Department of Education on special projects. Hadley Ferguson Hadley Ferguson is a middle school history teacher at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia. She is also a part of the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources Mentor Advisory Board. Hadley is very active in her school and community, and is the co-founder of EdCamp Philly, a participant-driven conference for K-12 educators. Eric Sheninger Eric Sheninger is the principal of New Milford High School in Bergen County, New Jersey. He is a Google Certified Teacher and has received acclaim from numerous educational technology organizations for his work on integrating Web 2.0 technology and social media into education. Lisa Nielsen Lisa Nielson is the Technology Innovation Manager for the NYC Department of Education’s Office of Educational Technology. Lisa advocates “passion-driven learning,” speaking to audiences about the importance of utilizing technology in education. She is an award winning blogger, writing at Innovative Educator, and is the author of the book Teaching Generation Text. Vicki Davis Vicki Davis is a technology teacher from Georgia who founded the Flat Classroom Projects in 2006, which connects classrooms around the world using Web 2.0 technology so that teachers can collaborate globally with other teachers. She is a Google Certified Teacher and the author of the award-winning Cool Cat Teacher Blog. Chris Lehmann Chris Lehmann is Principal of the Science Leadership Academy, an innovative college-preparatory school that emphasizes learning science, math and entrepreneurship through a rigorous inquiry-based curriculum.
